This Is What Any Responsible Owner Should Do When It Comes To Vehicle Engine Oil Change
Engine oil is what keeps your vehicle running smooth and it is the most important parameter that any vehicle owner should pay close attention to.
Changing your engine oil regularly is the first step in prolonging the life of your engine. The main function of engine oil is to reduce the friction and lubricate the moving metal parts inside an engine. Lacking engine oil, the engine would come to a halt in minutes or burst into a cloud of smoke.
Engine oil also helps in engine cooling, although in a very limited capacity. Engine has a dedicated system for cooling that uses air or water as the cooling agent.
Like every other part, even oil has its expiry after which it stops performing. Since the oil runs through the engine and lubricates metal parts, it becomes dirty and hence requires regular change to discharge its duties efficiently.
If the oil isn’t changed for a long period of time, the dirty oil accumulates sludge – a combination of solid, carbon-based dirt and the oil itself breaking down during oxidation. As a result, the engine starts to wear out and there will be damages that will make you regret. Not only does it force you to change the oil, sometimes even the engine. You might also have to dig deep into your pockets. Therefore, it iss better to just change the oil on regular intervals and keep your engine healthy.
In general, you can change the oil every 5000 to 8000 kilometres. However, it depends on a few factors like how you drive, where you drive more often - like in the city or highway (driving in a city is more demanding than the highway). Whether the area you live in is dusty, cold, or hot and so on. In case your vehicle is exposed to extreme conditions then changing your engine oil every 5000 kilometres is mandatory.
Changing the engine oil is also important because it results in protecting other engine parts. The engine in your vehicle consists of various parts like the crank shaft and the connecting rods to perform its task. It also has the camshaft that enables in opening and closing the vehicle’s exhaust valves. In order to keep these in shape, you have to make sure the engine oil is changed as and when required.
It also has its economical uses as the mileage of your vehicle gets better. Friction is not something you would want to have as it impacts the performance of the vehicle. When there is friction the engine has to work harder to keep things moving and hence there is an unnecessary loss of energy. As a result, the mileage of the vehicle also comes down drastically. However, you don’t have to worry about such an issue if you are changing the engine oil on time.
